On the label of Peroni beer, which was recently subject to restyling, we read: “indiscutibilmente italiana” (“unquestionably Italian”) and, a little further down, “produced in Bari, Rome, Padua”. The intention of the house is evident: to emphasize as much as possible the Italian nature of this historic brand, a leader on the domestic market, but above all an authentic symbol of the Made in Italy in the world.
Birra Peroni was born in Vigevano, in Lombardy, back in 1846 through the work of Francesco. It is a low fermentation lager beer, whose recipe will later be perfected by Giovanni, son of Francesco. Within a few years it established itself, first locally, then on the entire national territory. The factories in Rome were opened in 1864 and, subsequently, in Bari in 1924.
The real success, however, came after the war, with the economic boom and the company’s large investments in communication which created the myth of the “national blond” (because in Italy we don’t say “light beer” or “lager”: we say “blond beer”. Isn’t that beautiful?), the Italian beer that brings our Country together and also symbolizes it.
1963 is the year of the launch of Nastro Azzurro, the Italian premium beer by Peroni. A slightly more alcoholic product than the classic Peroni, more bitter and with a more intense flavor. The name originates from the homonymous prize awarded to the Rex transatlantic, the fastest that achieved the Atlantic crossing.
Nastro Azzurro is a beer that symbolizes outdoor life, freedom, the sea, and nature. However, it did not immediately meet the public’s favor. For this reason, its recipe was perfected and, also thanks to a great communication campaign, it became more and more popular, both in Italy and abroad. Today, Nastro Azzurro is the best-selling Italian beer in the world.
Beer Peroni is part of the Asahi group, a big international reality present in 90 countries. The Italian company has a workforce of over 750 employees, 3 production plants, and a malt house. The production chain involves more than 1500 farmers.
Of the 6 million hectoliters of Italian beer produced each year, 2,5 million are destined for foreign markets. Speaking of exports, in many countries Peroni beer is marketed under the double name Peroni Nastro Azzurro.
