In recent years, Barilla has also distinguished itself for the constant search for new, intriguing and appetizing shapes of pasta. Bell Italia, the one and only showcase of made in Italy food for wholesalers and retailers from all over the world, had already talked about this here. In a competition promoted several years ago, Barilla had chosen (and patented) 3 new formats made by international designers using3d printers. The winner of the contest was Loris Tupin, a Frenchman who had proposed a model in the shape of a bud which, during cooking, opened and transformed into a beautiful rose.Vortipa is the name of the second format: conceived by two Italian designers, it was a whirlwind of pasta that, when turned upside down, looked like a nice Christmas tree. The third format was called Lune (which means “moons” in Italian), the moon-shaped ball – conceived by an Italian designer – with holes, similar to lunar craters, that allow to contain the sauce perfectly.
These new formats, while beautiful, have not yet entered production. Probably because transforming 3D models into product lines proved impractical and uneconomical.
