In 1899, Knight Marcellino Mutti founded "Fratelli Mutti" with the aim of transforming the farm into a tomato processing industry, thus continuing a path of agricultural innovation already undertaken by his father Francesco (1828-1909) and his grandfather Giovanni (1804-1894).

Mutti Company: History and Commitment

Thanks to his dedication and ability to embrace innovations, Marcellino Mutti became the owner of a significant estate in Piazza di Basilicanova. With the acquisition of the company, the Muttis established a close collaboration with the Traveling Agricultural Chair of Parma, led by the famous Professor Antonio Bizzozero. This collaboration was recognized with a diploma praising the Mutti brothers for their diligent tomato cultivation, which was destined to become the main activity of the family business.

In addition to the tomato processing company, the Muttis also managed a modern dairy that processed about 2,000 liters of milk daily, mainly from the company's own stables.

Marcellino Mutti's four sons (Ferdinando, Ugo, Giovanni, and Francesco) showed great enterprise, transforming the company into a key player in the industrial era in the fertile Po Valley, especially in the province of Parma. The company has always combined modern technologies with a strong loyalty to traditions and product culture.

In the first half of the 20th century, the canning company received important awards for quality and innovation, such as the gold medal at the Rome Exhibition in 1911 and the Palme d'Or at the Paris World Exhibition in 1925. The innovative capacity and attention to advanced technologies made Mutti a reference point for industry operators and consumers.

Over the years, the success of tomato paste grew to the point that the company had to acquire other factories to obtain sufficient quantities of raw material. The launch of the tomato paste tube was a brilliant idea but required experimentation to ensure the perfect preservation of the high-acidity product. The change in consumer mentality, accustomed to canned preserves, was overcome by the advantage of proper product preservation until the end, making the Mutti Tube an icon recognized and appreciated for twenty years.

Another milestone for the company was the launch, in 1970, of "Polpa," a finely chopped and drained peeled tomato that revolutionized cooking. The production method of Polpa remains a secret and guarantees unmatched quality.

The company, originally a family business, continued to expand until Marcellino Mutti's death in 1941. Subsequently, the four sons maintained a collaborative relationship until 1963, when a general partnership was formed. In 1979, the company became a joint-stock company, with Dr. Marcello Mutti and the heirs of Dr. Giancarlo Mutti each holding half of the capital. In 1988, Dr. Marcello Mutti acquired the entire share package, leading to strong growth in the quantities of processed tomatoes and turnover, thanks to significant investments in real estate and machinery.

Under the leadership of his son Francesco, who became CEO in 1994, "Mutti" continued to grow, becoming one of the leading Italian companies in the tomato sector in the new millennium.
